El Dorado County
El Dorado County stretches from the foothills above the Sacramento Valley through the mountains to Lake Tahoe. It is considered the " Golden County" of California because it is at the heart of California's Gold Rush country and is often also called the "Mother Lode." Folsom Lake and rolling foothills are on the western border with Sacramento County. Lake Tahoe and 10,000 foot mountain peaks are on the eastern border that is shared with the State of Nevada. If you’d rather see the county from the whitewater that cascades down from the Sierra Nevada, try the South Fork American River is suitable for kids 7 to 75! Numerous professional outfitters offer trips ranging from short half-day jaunts on up two-day adventures. The South Fork winds it's way through the heart of the Mother Lode as it passes abandoned mines, tailings, flumes and other artifacts from the Gold Rush era.
There is also a Desolation Wilderness which is 12-1/2 miles long and 8 miles wide, and is accessed by 15 named and numbered trailheads ready for exploring. The relatively small wilderness area contains many small streams with about 150 alpine and sub-alpine lakes. Elevations within the wilderness range from about 7,000 to over 10,000 feet.
The Placerville Speedway may get your heart racing. It features dirt track racing at the El Dorado County Fairgrounds on Saturday nights in the spring and summer.
