Te Awanga is renowned for its cool coastal climate, long growing season and moderate vigour soils, which combine to produce relatively low-yielding crops with high flavour intensity. Te Awanga Vineyards Ltd operates three vineyards located in the Te Awanga appellation on the Clifton coast, Hawke’s Bay. Vineyards were developed from 1996 through to 2006 and became the founding contributors to the Kim Crawford Wines brand, in a relationship lasting until 2009 and the final merger of Kim Crawford with Constellation New Zealand. The ‘Te Awanga Estate’ brand is well-known and Te Awanga branded wines from the vineyards have maintained a market presence since 1998. Wines from the vineyards have shown particularly well over the years, winning numerous awards and consistently meeting the price point expectations of the winemaker. Ownership of the vineyards remains with the founding partnership, whilst the General Manager has been appointed for vintage 2010, to develop the business as a contract grape supplier post the Kim Crawford/Constellation relationship. General Manager Xan Harding is well known in the Hawke’s Bay industry and continues to manage the Doc’s Block vineyard, winner of the 2007 Bragato Trophy, as well as his own vineyard. The vineyards are all Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand accredited.’ Upon arrival at the cellar door facility there is a large courtyard, attractive plantings and car parking. Upon entry a casual glance to the east provides a superb over view of the main vineyard to ocean and around to Cape Kidnappers. The facility was built in 1999 and also includes kitchen, office and storage areas. Water is town supply and the bio-effluent system is designed to handle winery waste as it has been envisaged that a small winery would be erected adjacent to the main facility. The cellar door facility is under a lease agreement. Plant and machinery to manage the vineyard is included in the sale. The apartment contains separate bedroom, lounge, kitchenette and bathroom. |
