Red Mountain was named an appellation in 2001. The smallest of the appellations in the state of Washington it is located between Benton City and West Richland which is within the Yakima Valley. Out of the 4000 acres in this area, 700 are planted in wine grapes. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet franc, Syrah, Merlot and Sangiovese are all grown in this region. They are well known as one of the best places for red grapes in particular and has become home to some of Washington's finest wines. It is very hard to find vineyards and wineries which are for sale in this region because of it's size.
