Peter's Prairie Vineyard is an established grower operation located in the heart of the Texas Hill Country AVA . The well-drained sandstone soil and the micro-climate of the region provide excellent terroir for hot climate Spanish, Italian, and French varietals. Commanding premium prices for grapes, Peter's Prairie Vineyard is positioned to provide top vintners in Frederickburg quality grapes for at least the next five years. 20 acres of Texas soil have been lovingly planted with Syrah, Barbara, Primativo and Zinfandel going into their 6th growing season. Immature vines of Albarino and Nebbiolo, though newly planted, thrived this growing season in the warm sunshine and even produced small bunches in the first year.
This very location was once farmed for cotton by a man called Peter and there is a documented history of his life and community at the Mason Public Library. The Cartwrights felt is was the perfect name to pay homage to the history and life of this man so they name their new vineyard Peter's Prairie. A labor of love, the couple and their daughters created this vineyard from the ground up. Careful planning for site selection, varietal choice, water management and frost protection were considered in building.
Neighboring growers in Mason as well as a professor from Texas A&M collaborated with the Cartwrights. Over the years the friendships have forged a close community within Mason and the Texas Wine Growers Network. The Cartwrights became respected members and contributed much to the growth and quality of the Texas wine industry.
