This premium vineyard is at a desirable 3000 ft. elevation – below the snow and way above the fog. Wine made from the 6 acres of Shiraz received a 93 from Wine Spectator, and the property also has two acres of Petite Syrah. The property is fenced, and the balance of the 28 acres are suitable for vineyard expansion. The current owners have horses, complete with eight stalls and hay storage in a huge barn that could easily become a small home winery. The Central Coast winery, which purchases the grapes annually, is encouraging the owners to expand the vineyard, and would hopefully provide a market for the crop.
The vineyard elevation averages about 2900 feet. The area is considered a "banana belt." The existing planting is ideally situated on a slight slope facing south. The soil classification is Aiken (AkC), which is a cobbly loam. The existing vines are on a drip irrigation system supported by a well rated at 57 gpm. There are approximately 14 acres available for vineyard expansion. The majority of this acreage is currently in pasture. The vineyard is managed by the current owner. A vineyard consultant is utilized. The grape sales arrangements should continue, provided the vineyard is maintained to meet the winery fruit requirements. The majority of the vines were planted in 1993. There are 3126 vines on 5.74 acres. Technically, the vines are Clone 1 Shiraz on 101-14 rootstock and are on a vertical trellis system. The spacing is 8X10 and the rows run north-south. The vineyard is capable of producing four tons per acre. The wineries the grower deals with prefer production be limited to about three and a half tons per acre. The grower currently has contracts with two wineries who purchase 100% of the grapes grown. The wine produced from the Syrah vineyard received a score of 93 from Wine Spectator Magazine.
